What kind of mobile unit used as a base station would you recommend ? I would be using it for ARES/Aux-comm etc. Tech license only. Do you have a mobile unit? What do you like and dislike about it?

I have a Yaesu FT-7800R and am very happy with it. It's easy to program, good quality audio, very reliable. Had one component fail a few years ago, but the company's American service center repaired it promptly. You can't go wrong with Yaesu equipment.

Yes, I like Yaesu too! Did you buy yours new or used? I like the price of used better but don't want to get one with problems. I'm probably going to have to buy new. Do you recommend HRO? I am still vacillating between just getting the cheapest Yaesu model now or save money to buy a fancier Yaesu. I don't really see myself getting into digital modes and all that though. I am not fond of electronic gadgets of any sort. Just want one that will serve me in an emergency. I am doing my darnedest to thoroughly learn the ft-60r and am not relishing the idea of learning a new radio but I know that this HT isn't powerful enough.
Thanks,
Lora KE7ZFQ

I bought mine new at a SeaPAC several years ago. Yaesu discounts their radios at their booth every year. Unfortunately, due to the COVID-19, SeaPac has been canceled for this year. I try to avoid HRO. They are pretty expensive. You can get a better deal from Universal Radio. They also sell used equipment with a limited warranty. www.universal-radio.com/alert.html
The FT7800R is no longer available new, but you may be able to find a good used one. It's the radio that is also in all the Red Cross trailers. I'm not sure what the current model is that has replaced it.
